Once again, let me explain. I was not truly hoping WET would exist. What I was saying is that it’s seen as inappriopriate and offensive within American Society to give a white person an award because they are the best at what they do, and white, or to be associated with an organization that is just for white people, and yet this seems to be perfectly acceptable for many other races. White people indeed have more opportunity in many ways, but if I walk around saying I am proud to be white, I am viewed by many as a racist and not celebrated for appreciating my own heritage as others are when they comment and gather to celebrate their own heritage.

If you agree that whites have more opportunity—that it is far more likely a white person will see people who share their skin color on TV and that those they see will be portrayed positively and fairly than it is for a person of color to experience the same thing; that it is far more likely that a white person will win an award from a predominantly white institution/organization than it is for a person of color to win the same award; that it is far more likely a white person will gain admission into a predominantly white school than it is that a person of color will gain admission into the same school—and you agree that at least to an extent, this unfair advantage is due to racism, then you fully understand why it is important for people of color to have their own spaces, their own TV channels, their own awards, institutions, organizations and colleges. Because they have little to no advantage over white people in the general population due to racism and are frequently unfairly represented, passed over, and excluded, people of color create their own spaces that are for them alone, so that they have a space where they can be recognized, acknowledged, represented, and included without having to worry about unfair discrimination.

White people don’t need a white-only or white-advantaged space because every other space more or less functions in that capacity, just as we don’t need to say that we have pride in our white heritage because there is no broadly understood idea in society that white people, as a collective, have something to be ashamed of or have something wrong with them.

Your color, i.e. “white”, is not your heritage. Your race is your heritage. Everyone who classifies themselves as “white” has some kind of ancestry because everyone has some kind of ancestry. We live in country filled with people from different areas of the planet. The only reason we separate white brown and black is because our perceptions give us colors as an easy way to categorize. Many “whites” have European ancestry, many “browns” have African or Indian ancestry. Why don’t we call Asians white then? Their skin color is white isn’t it? It’s because we can more easily recognize their heritage as Asian descendants. Forget privileges, c’mon people we are clearly missing the point that color is such a superficial way to differentiate everyone…

Let’s take a quick trip back to 1965. Mick Jagger. Just say his name. It’s nice, right? He may be old and wrinkly now, but he used to be quite the looker . He’s also got awesome bone structure. It’s in his genes, your kids will have it too!

He was the bad boy your parents begged you not to go out with. He was the singer of bad ass, known ‘round the world rock ‘n roll band But he had a funny, sweet side as well. He was even friends with The Beatles, his fellow English rockers!

He’s got a great smile and laugh. But then he srs’d and started listening to what you had to say.

Mick’s voice is amazing. Who doesn’t love hearing some British accent while listening to some classic rock? He does enjoy thinking of all the stuff you’d do in the bedroom. But remember, the man does like his space.

Stage presence. Buddy Holly has it. Did you see those bad ass dance moves? They’ll drive you crazy. Sure he may be dead, but that’s okay. Living in the past is perfectly acceptable.

He’s an awkward, nerdy guy. The best kind of man, in my opinion.

He’s a regular old southern gentleman, and if he’s that calm, cool, and collective, just imagine his wild side.

Buddy Holly has a voice. I know you want to rave on with him. The man is full of pure talent. Look at that goddamn concentration on his face! But he can relax, too, so it’s all good.

He’s a dedicated man, who has awesome glasses and who dresses with class, but has a good time doing it. Who doesn’t want a man like that? Class never goes out of style.

If you’ve never been to Chicago then you might not know that the only thing more intense than our weather is our ability to talk about it. It’s an inevitability. With minus zero winds and freezing rain we talk about weather (a conversation topic usually reserved for awkward moments on dates and at bus stops) with an excitement and fervor usually reserved for politics and sports. Everyone has their own theories on what will happen day-to-day with the weather, each person agreeing that trusting the “Weatherman” is a cardinal mistake and the equivalent of listening to eastern mystics or trying to divine the wind pattern from the entrails of birds and chicken bones flung against the ground. What can be agreed upon is that weather becomes a monster in Chicago. Cold freezing impasses at intersections and shin deep slush anticipating ankles and dry socks. One walks down the street swearing into the wind and when finally climbing aboard a bus or train is greeted by a host of red noses and empathetic eyes as the caked snow sloughs off shoulders to become puddles on the floor. But somehow this intensity of pure cold hell becomes a badge of honor. We literally weather the weather. Perhaps our complaining is really bragging. We snuff at others who come from warmer clients and enjoy enlightening new residents as to the severity of the winter they face. “You think this is bad? You just wait.” is the preferred answer to autumn cold complaints. It is our shared burden and our collective pride. I dread it, hate it and thrive on it.

But sometimes it’s majestic. Sheets of ice that stretch across the lake heave and crack while icicles descend crystalline off the gargoyles on the gothic downtown buildings. On late nights, with beer jackets wrapped tightly around us, the pristine uninterrupted expanse of freshly fallen snow glows orange under streetlights as if bathed in a candles warmth and we catch snowflakes on our tongues as we struggle laughing through cold drifts, our ankles dry and cheeks flushed. We strip to long-johns and cuddle under covers reliving childlike games of eskimos and arctic tundras.

Today the flakes fall lightly and the air is crisp. I’m going to take a walk and listen to Arcade Fire’s Funeral on my ipod. I’m through worrying about the fucking weather.

This gurl in my AP Lit class asked me to join a peace movement by making cookies and such for the ppl that dont like us or ppl we dont like. I told her why not make cookies for the homeless shelter. She said true but she thought it would bring more peace if we gave it to ppl we dont like. I told her that the homeless ppl need more warmth than these silly kids in school. She said she would give it to all the brown ppl (Middle Eastern, she is Middle Eastern too). I gave her a blank stare.
